All health practitioners wanting to work in a New Zealand hospital/healthcare facility in the scope of practice of an Anaesthetic Technician must be registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand.
When you apply to the Medical Sciences Council for registration as an Anaesthetic Technician you will need to provide a number of documents as evidence that you have the required qualifications and experience that demonstrate you are competent to practise as an Anaesthetic Technician.
If you were registered with NZATS as at 31 May 2011 and intend to apply for registration with the Council before 30 April 2012 please refer to the section Interim Pathways to Registration 2011.
If you are a NZ registered/enrolled nurse and intend to apply for registration with the Council before 31 March 2013 please refer to the section Interim Pathways to Registration 2011
All other applicants should refer to either the New Zealand Graduates or the Overseas Qualified section
Once you have been granted registration, you must be issued with an annual practising certificate before you can work in New Zealand as an Anaesthetic Techician. Annual practising certificates must be renewed every year and their issue is dependent on you providing the Council with all required information as stated on the renewal application form.
If you have not held an annual practising certificate or worked in the profession of anaesthetic technology within the last 3 years, you must be able to demonstrate to the Council that you are competent to practise as an Anaesthetic Technician in New Zealand.
From time to time the Council may be informed of concerns about the competence, health, and/or conduct of an individual Anaesthetic Technician. The Council has a number of avenues it can use if concerns are raised about the competence, health, and/or conduct of a registered Anaesthetic Technician, including competence reviews, health reviews, and conduct reviews.
The Council has adopted a set of Competencies for Anaesthetic Technicians and demonstration of these competencies is a requirement for registration and ongoing recertification with the Medical Sciences Council.
If you are a registered Anaesthetic Technician and plan to leave New Zealand to work overseas, you must notify the Council and leave them details of your new contact address. If you gain employment in the anaesthetic technology profession overseas you may be required to provide your employer/relevant registration body with evidence of your registration and competence to practise when in New Zealand.
If you are registered as an Anaesthetic Technician you are required under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 to promptly notify the Council of any changes to your name and/or address.
