REGISTRATION AS A MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST - GRADUATE OF THE GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN SCIENCE QUALIFICATION PROGRAMME:

Another route to registration as a medical laboratory scientist is via completion of the Graduate Diploma in Science qualification and work experience requirements.

You can only apply to enroll in the Graduate Diploma in Science if you are a registered medical laboratory technician and have worked for at least 12 months fulltime in a suitable medical laboratory (either in New Zealand or overseas) prior to commencement of the Graduate Diploma Programme.

If you want to enroll in the Graduate Diploma in Science route to registration you must complete the Council-issued Application Form.  See link at bottom of this page to download to a copy of the Application Diploma Route to Registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist form.

Approval to enroll in the Graduate Diploma in Science requires sign-off from two other sources - your employer and the university providing the course of study - prior to approval from the Council.

A Graduate Diploma in Science qualification programme is offered through the Auckland University of Technology and Massey University. Persons interested in obtaining registration through this route should contact one of these universities.

The university may approve your enrolment in the Graduate Diploma on the proviso that you complete some other course of study prior to enrolment in the diploma programme.

You must be employed in a ISO 15189 accredited diagnostic medical laboratory as a registered medical laboratory technician and provide evidence to the Council (prior to the commencement starting the programme) of support from your employer to undertake the practical (laboratory) components of the programme.

Should you change employment during the course of your graduate diploma study programme, you will need to provide the Council with evidence of support from your new employer.  The new employing diagnostic medical laboratory will need to be ISO 15189 accredited.

Once you have completed the Graduate Diploma in Science course of study and apply to the Council for registration as a medical laboratory scientist you must be able to show that, post enrolment, you have a minimum of 2 years fulltime (or equivalent) work experience in a diagnostic medical laboratory that is ISO 15189 accredited.  A substantial component of that experience, that is at least 50%, must be in an area directly relevant to the practice of diagnostic medical laboratory science.  At this point in time this excludes anybody working in the area(s) of phlebotomy and specimen services or as a donor services technician.  Any time you were employed in a non-ISO accredited diagnostic medical laboratory will not count towards to this 2-year fulltime (or equivalent) employment requirement.

Applications to change your scope of practice of medical laboratory technician to that of medical laboratory scientist are to be made on the Council-issued Application for Registration/Change of Scope of Practice form.  See link at bottom of this page to download a copy of the Application for Registration/Change of Scope of Practice form.

Your application must be signed and dated and be accompanied by the following documentation:

  • An original or certified copy of your qualification. A photocopy may be certified as a true copy by a solicitor, Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, or an Officer of the Court
  • Two Certificates of Good Character (one professional and one personal) that have been completed by persons unrelated to you.  See the link at the bottom of this page to download a Certificate of Good Character form.
  • Your application must be accompanied by a Fee Payment Form along with the payment of the registration fee of $230.00.  See link at the bottom of this page to download a copy of the Fee Payment form.
  • If you wish to be registered in a name different to that on your qualification documentation, you must also provide original document or certified copy of the relevant document (e.g. marriage certificate).

Providing your application is received with all the required documentation and the full registration fee payment, your application will be processed within 5 working days and you can expect to receive confirmation of registration within 10 working days from the day your application was received by the Council.

Once your registration has been granted you must apply to the Council for an annual practising certificate (APC) in order to be allowed to work as a registered medical laboratory scientist.  Please note that if you successfully apply for registration between December of the year that you complete your Graduate Diploma in Science requirements and March of the following year, a time limited APC will be issued free of charge on application.
