Recertification (CPD) Audits
A key aspect of the recertification programme is an audit of individual practitioners' recertification records against set criteria. This provides the Council and members of the public with reassurance that practising medical laboratory scientists and technicians are engaging in an ongoing process to maintain their competence within their relevant scope of practice.
Every practising medical laboratory scientist and medical laboratory technician may be subject to a recertification audit. It is reasonable to expect to be audited at least once every ten years.
Medical Laboratory Scientists:
Audits of the recertification records of medical laboratory scientists are the responsibility of the provider of the recertification programme. These audits must be undertaken by a person or persons outside of the recertification programme provider.
Each recertification provider must provide the Council with an annual audit report of of all participants and their progress in the recertification programme.
You are also required to declare to the Council when applying for the renewal of your APC, the number of points/credits you gained in your recertification programme in the previous twelve-month period. This declaration is then checked against the audit information received from the relevant recertification programme provider.
Practitioners who have failed to meet the points/credits requirements of the relevant recertification programme may be required to provide the Council with a written explanation and the issue of an APC may be delayed or denied.
Medical Laboratory Technicians:
An annual audit of a random sample of at least 10% of registered medical laboratory technicians is undertaken by Medical Sciences Secretariat, on behalf of the Council.
As a registered medical laboratory technician you must keep a record of the professional development activities you have engaged in for the previous twelve-month period as you could be required to provide this to the Council if called up for audit.
