Ensuring the professions of medical laboratory science and anaesthetic technology deliver safe and effective services to the people of New Zealand
All persons wanting to work in a New Zealand diagnostic medical laboratory in the scopes of practice of a medical laboratory scientist or a medical laboratory technician must be registered with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand
All registration applications incur a fee that must be paid prior to registration being approved. Should a registration application be declined, the fee received by the Council will not be refunded.
The Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand has specified two scopes of practice within the profession of medical laboratory science:
Without registration a person may not use the title of medical laboratory scientist or medical laboratory technician or do anything calculated to suggest a person is qualified to be registered or able to practise as a medical laboratory scientist or medical laboratory technician.
Persons applying to be registered as a medical laboratory scientist or a medical laboratory technician must hold a qualification prescribed by the Council or approved by the Council as being substantially equivalent to the prescribed qualifications.
In addition to having an approved qualification you may also be required to demonstrate that you have adequate experience in the profession of medical laboratory science.
When applying for registration you must be able to demonstrate to the Council that you are a fit person to practise in the profession of medical laboratory science.
Communicating laboratory results and liaising with medical staff and colleagues is a core competency required of a medical laboratory scientist or medical laboratory technician working within the laboratory environment. If your medical laboratory science training was carried out in a language other than English, you will need to provide the Council with evidence that you are proficient in English prior to registration being approved.
