Medical Laboratory Technician and Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technicians

Recertification programme for medical laboratory technicians

A medical laboratory technician applying for an APC must have undertaken at least:

  • A minimum of eight hours or 16 Points (NZIMLS) of approved professional development
  • Must be undertaken within a twelve-month period (January to December)
  • CPD activities must be relevant to your scope of practise
  • CPD activities must be additional to and enhance your normal laboratory practise
  • You must maintain a record of the professional development activities you have undertaken. These records will be required as evidence should you be called for audit by the Council.

You must maintain a record of the professional development activities you have undertaken.  These records will be required as evidence should you be called up for audit.  These professional development activities must be relevant to your scope of practice and be additional to and enhance your normal laboratory practice.

Should you fail to meet the requirements of the recertification programme for medical laboratory technicians, you may be referred to the Council's registration committee.

CPD and compliance audit

An annual audit of a random sample of at least 10% of registered MLTs and MLPATs undertaken by Medical Sciences Secretariat, on behalf of the Council.

As a registered medical laboratory technician you must keep a record of the professional development activities you have engaged in for the previous twelve-month period as you could be required to provide this to the Council if called up for audit.

Exemptions

While you can apply to the Council for an exemption from a recertification programme, exemption is the exception rather than a rule and will not be approved on an ongoing/long-term basis.  Being away on parental leave for any period within a CPD programme cycle is one situation where the Council may grant an exemption.  All requests for exemption are to be submitted to the Council when you apply for your APC.  You can email these requests to msc@medsci.co.nz.
