Online Examination
Eligibility
The online examination is a gazetted pathway to registration and is only available to you if the Council assesses you as meeting the criteria to be offered the opportunity to sit the examination as a pathway to registration under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (HPCA/the Act).
Eligibility for Medical Laboratory Scientist Examination:
You may be offered the opportunity to sit the online examination if:
- You hold a relevant New Zealand, or overseas undergraduate or post-graduate science degree, combined with appropriate medical laboratory science experience; and
- Your application is reviewed and deemed that your qualification is not substantially equivalent to the required New Zealand standard.
Eligibility for Anaesthetic Technician Examination:
You may be offered the opportunity to sit the online examination if:
- You hold a relevant qualification in anaesthetic technology combined with relevant and specialised anaesthetic technology experience; and
- Your application is reviewed and deemed that your qualification is not substantially equivalent to the required New Zealand standard.
If the Council considers you meet the criteria outlined above, the Council may then offer you the opportunity to sit the online examination as a pathway to registration under the Act.
How do I sit the online examination?
Enrolment
Following the online examination offer, when enrolments have opened for your desired examination date, you must complete the examination enrolment form through your online profile. This form will require you to provide information such as your preferred time to sit the examination and the country you'll sit the examination from. You'll also be required to agree to the terms and conditions of the examination and pay the appropriate fee.
For information regarding the examination fee, please see the fee schedule published on the resources tab of our website.
Please note, you must pay an examination fee each time you sit the examination. This means you must pay a new fee (and submit a new online examination agreement) if you are resitting the examination.
For information about the fees, refer to the Fees Notice for each profession on the website under Resources - Secondary Legislation.
Registration for the examination
Once you've completed the examination enrolment form, we'll provide instructions on how to register for an examination time with the exam host, Kryterion.
Location
The online examination is administered by Kryterion Inc. a company located in Arizona, USA. The online examination is completed via an online proctoring set-up. Online proctoring means that you log on through the internet to take your examination. You are monitored by a proctor employed by Kryterion Inc. during your entire testing session in real-time. This monitoring involves your face, voice, desk, and workspace being captured via a webcam, and a recording is made of these images for examination security and the integrity of the examination process.
If you're currently enrolled to sit the Online Examination, please contact the Examinations Coordinator for further information.
Delivery
The Council’s online examination will be delivered through an online environment – and you'll need to have access to a computer to sit the examination.
The exam will be overseen by an examination proctor whose role is to verify your identity and ensure that the instructions specified by the MSC are carried out.
We strongly recommend exam candidates schedule their exams between 8.30am to 1pm (New Zealand time) to maximise the technical support available to them.
Identification required
You'll be required to provide the exam proctor with two forms of identification, one of which must be a current, valid government-issued photo identification. You must also provide your unique authorisation code.
Should the exam proctor have a reasonable concern about your ability to properly establish your identity, or there is concern that identity documents are being misused, you will be refused access to the exam. Anyone who is refused access to the exam forfeits the prepaid examination fee.
