Update: Changes proposed for medical laboratory science scopes of practice

1 Sept, 2026

Earlier this year the Council asked for feedback on the Medical Laboratory Science scopes of practice as part of a review. After considering feedback received, the Council has agreed to make changes to the scope structure. Details of these changes will be included in the consultation outcome document once it is finalised.

The Council intends to end registration in the provisional scopes and combine the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) and Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician (MLPT) scopes. These changes will not happen immediately - further information will be provided before they take effect.

Before the changes are made, the Council will undertake further consultation as part of the review process.  Information about what these changes mean for practitioners will be shared as the work progresses and further decisions are made.

The Council is also in the process of reviewing the competence standards for the Medical Laboratory Science profession along with related policies to help ensure they continue to support safe practice now and in the future.

The Council is also continuing to consider the matter of advanced/ expanded practice and further meetings with the sector will occur as this progresses.
